Common Treatment Post Operative Instructions
Among the most common procedures that patients go through is tooth extraction. Immediately following the procedure, gauze will be given to them to bite on to stop the bleeding at the site of the extraction. This should be done for at least 20 minutes to control the bleeding. In the event the bleeding starts again, pressure must be placed on the site again for at least 20 minutes using another piece of clean gauze. You should get in touch with our office in the unlikely event the bleeding persists.
After the bleeding stops, cold fluids and soft but cool foods can help. However, carbonated drinks and straws must be avoided up to 5 days after the procedure so as not to interfere with the healing process by dislodging the blood clot.
The area of extraction may develop some swelling, which can be treated by applying an ice pack to the affected spot. Use the medication that we prescribe for pain management. If the pain is unmanageable, you can give our office a call and come back in to see us. Always use gentle strokes when brushing or flossing, so you do not dislodge the blood clot in the extraction site.
For fillings, it is normal to feel numbness in the area after the procedure, as a local anesthetic will likely have been used. This can last up to about three hours.
Hard and sticky foods must be avoided for a dental crown procedure. You will feel quite sensitive after going through this, but that is normal. Contact our office if you have an uneven bite or persistent pain following the procedure.
For all these procedures, it is normal for the gums to be sore or red. Brushing and flossing regularly after the procedure can help to reduce the effects swollen, red and uncomfortable gums that are being experienced. It is important to keep up with the follow-up care for any dental procedure to ensure that it is properly healing and to avoid an infection.
