Laser Dentistry FAQ
Wichita, KS

What is a laser?

Dental lasers deliver energy in the form of light. Depending on the intended result, this energy travels at different wavelengths and is absorbed by a target. These targets can be enamel, decay, gum tissue or whitening enhancers. Each one absorbs a different wavelength of light while reflecting others.

Is a dental laser different from a drill?

Dental lasers are preferred over drills for a variety of reasons. A dental laser is more efficient and faster than a drill. The patient experiences less discomfort, bacteria levels are reduced, less damage of healthy tissue occurs and often times, no anesthesia is required. Laser dental procedures are safer than a drill and typically result in decreased healing time.

Is laser dentistry safe?

Laser dentistry is very safe. When operating within the appropriate guidelines, trained dentists perform procedures that are as safe or safer than other forms of dental treatment. Dental lasers are approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA). With the correct training and proper eye protection, laser dentistry is very safe.

What are the benefits of using the laser?

•  They are much quieter than a dental drill, with no whining or vibration.
•  They are very precise, so there is minimal impact on oral tissues.
•  They are gentle and generally painless and often require little or no anesthesia.
•  They can minimize bleeding and swelling and speed healing time.
•  They reduce the risk of infection by decontaminating the affected areas.
