Dr. Healy talking to a young patient while giving her a dental exam at Tiny Teeth Pediatric Dentistry.Dental exams are a critical component of maintaining a healthy mouth. The ADA recommends at least two exams every year. Exams are designed to check your teeth and gums for signs of damage, decay, infections and other issues. Early detection helps to prevent serious oral health problems that affect not only your mouth but your overall health as well. Dental exams are important for everyone, including children. At Tiny Teeth Pediatric Dentistry, we provide dental exams for your child, helping them to maintain a beautiful, healthy smile.

The First Visit

Many parents tend to think that if their child does not yet have teeth, then they do not need to visit the dentist. Their first visit should be earlier than most think. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, or AAPD, recommends that your child is seen for their very first dental visit six months following the eruption of their first tooth, or by their first birthday, whichever one occurs first.

The first visit is usually quite short. During this visit, and the next few following, we use this opportunity to meet your child and allow them to get accustomed to us and our office. We go over the importance of good oral hygiene practices and show you how to care for the teeth and gums of your child. We may also cover an array of other subjects including thumb sucking and tongue thrusting, developmental milestones, nutrition for good oral health and development, and the importance of regular dental visits. We will take the time to answer any questions you may have. We may also try to get a quick look inside the mouth of your child to check for any issues, and apply fluoride to the erupted teeth.

Toddlers & Young Children

As your child grows into toddlerhood, and beyond, we will begin regular dental exams. These exams are used to check for tooth decay and cavities, assess their risk for developing tooth decay, check for signs of issues such as gum disease, alignment problems and more, and evaluate their overall oral health. We can determine the need for treatments like dental sealants and fluoride. If cavities are found, we can take action with fillings. We will also check the way the jaws come together and may even recommend orthodontic treatment.

During these dental exams, we can help to advise young children on the effects of thumb sucking and nail-biting. If your child is involved in sports, we will also provide information on the importance of wearing a custom fit mouthguard.

Dental X-Rays for Your Child

Just like you, dental x-rays are important for your child. X-rays can help us to determine the need for orthodontic treatment. They allow us to monitor the development of young teeth and bone. They also help us to spot cavities between the teeth. With the advances made in dental technology, we can take images digitally, which greatly reduces the exposure to radiation.

Dental exams are important for everyone, including your child. For more information, or to schedule a visit for your child, call Tiny Teeth Pediatric Dentistry at (316) 202-9629, today.
