As a parent, knowing what to do during a dental emergency is very important. This is because kids engage in various activities that could cause dental injuries. For instance, kids could crack their teeth when engaging in various sporting activities. In adults, dental cracks are serious dental emergencies that need urgent care. However, this might not be the case in some kids. As much as bringing them in for further examination is highly recommended, some dental cracks don't need correction.
Dental Cracks in Kids
Some dental cracks in kids might not need correction, especially if they are minor. Furthermore, if the tooth is cracked but still stable, the need for correction is reduced. Doing correctional operations on these teeth could leave them weaker than before. This is because they are not developed enough to withstand the pressure and intensity of restorative operations. Furthermore, the teeth are not permanent and may shade off at some point as they grow up.
There are many causes of dental cracks in kids. For instance, it could be due to eating hard foods that weaken the enamel, teeth grinding, or athletic injuries. Furthermore, oversized cavity fillings could also cause dental cracks. This is why it is important to discourage habits such as chewing on hard foods or items that could cause cracks. In addition, if your child has grinding problems, you should get them a grinding guard that prevents excessive pressure on their teeth.
You can also encourage your kid to eat soft foods that prevent any risk of dental cracks. Furthermore, if the child participates in sporting activities, you should get them protective mouth guards. These are mouthguards designed for children and are highly effective in reducing damage. Contact our offices for more information on why some dental cracks in kids don't need correction.
