We get a lot of questions about sealants; How long do they last? Are they necessary? Do they really prevent cavities? And today we're going to look at these questions and give you some answers! So what are sealants exactly?
Dental sealants are a thin protective layer of special material that we apply directly to the teeth of your child during a regular office visit at Tiny Teeth Pediatric Dentistry. They're not painful or uncomfortable, and once your child's teeth are sealed, they won't even know it's on.
Are Dental Sealants Necessary?
Well, they're not necessary in that they're not required for good oral health, but they do reduce your child's risk for cavities and decay by 80%! That is a significant difference!
We encourage parents to start considering dental sealants as soon as your child starts getting his or her molars. These molars are at a higher risk for cavities and generally that's where dental sealants do the most good.
When your child comes in for their next appointment, we'll start with a good cleaning. After the teeth are dried, a mild acid solution will be applied directly to the tooth enamel to rough it up a bit so that the sealant can bond properly to the teeth.
Once the special sealant material is applied, it's cured with a special light. The process is completely painless and noninvasive.
How Long Do They Last?
Once the sealant is placed on the tooth, with proper care, brushing and a healthy diet, the sealants can last anywhere from four to eight years!
Every 6 months when your child comes in for a cleaning, we'll check the sealants and make sure that they're in good shape and let you know if any of them need to be replaced. Give us a call today at (316) 202-9629 and schedule your next cleaning and bring any additional questions you may have! We look forward to hearing from you!
